If you’ve heard of the movie Elegy at all, it’s probably only in conjunction with the word “nudity”. Videos of Penelope Cruz’s skin have been floating around the web for months now, with varying degrees of interest from skeevy dudes. Not that nudity in a Penelope Cruz movie should come as a surprise, the woman makes Angelina Jolie look like a prude.
Now we have the first poster for Elegy, and it does not in fact, contain nudity, or for that matter even all that much of Penelope Cruz. The movie is about a cultural critic who undergoes a sexual awakening with one of his students. Penelope Cruz does the awakening and Ben Kingsley is the awakened.
Based on the Philip Roth novella, The Dying Animal, Elegy is one of those pseudo-intellectual romps in which the classical music backdrop, fine wines and high minded existential gab as cunning seductive foreplay, make its run of the mill sleazy sexism all right. Ben Kingsley is David Kapesh in Elegy, an aging divorced English Literature professor at Columbia University, who seems to have made his career choice based on all the worshipful young coeds he can charm into bed on a regular basis.
