Leonor Varela Palma (born December 29, 1972) is a Chilean actress, spokesperson, and model. Leonor plays the character Cleopatra on the 1999 successful film Cleopatra. She also has actively participated in various ecological causes as “Save Whales Again”.
Since 1985, the Image Foundation has rewarded honest and positive representations of Latinos within the entertainment industry. This year, two Chilean actors have appeared among the award nominations: Leonor Varela and Jorge García.
For the gala event of the Image Foundation Awards scheduled for tonight, Varela is hoping to take home the award for Best Supporting Actress for a feature-length film, thanks to “Where God Left His Shoes”- a drama directed by Salvatore Stabile with Leonor Varela playing the wife of a character portrayed by John Leguizamo (who has also been nominated).
“It is a film with a lot of heart that is about a family from New York that becomes tangled up in serious financial troubles, loses their home and finally ends up going to live in a homeless shelter”, said Varela.
Varela also had a short recurring role in the Fox Television series Arrested Development as the original Marta. She was nominated for the Ariel Award in 2005 in the category of Best Actress for Innocent Voices (2004). She also had a non-recurring role in Stargate: Atlantis.
Her latest projects are Americano, Caleuche: The Call of the Sea, Casas de Cartón and Gigola where she plays feminist Laure Charpentier. She played Jordana in Goal! 2. Jordana was a journalist who had a one-night stand with Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker).
Varela is fluent in Spanish, English and French. She is also a marine life activist who is concerned with the welfare of whales.
