’s parents gave her the nickname Busy because, as an infant, she was always moving, and the nickname stuck; it even appears on her driver’s license. She attended Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. She attended Loyola Marymount University at the same time as Colin Hanks and Linda Cardellini (her Freaks and Geeks and ER co-star). She worked the toy-fair circuit as a real-life Barbie before making her show-business debut.

Philipps is godmother to Dawson’s co-star Michelle Williams’ and the late Heath Ledger’s daughter Matilda Rose, born in 2005.

Philipps is leaving ER after the second episode of Season 14; her character is headed to South America to “fulfill her Christian mission”.

She was ranked #58 on the Maxim Hot 100 Women of 2001.
Since landing a role on “Freaks and Geeks” in 1999, has been, well, busy.

In “Made of Honor,” opening Friday, Philipps is Melissa, a scorned bridesmaid angered not to have received the bridal party’s top billing. To make matters worse, she lost the battle to the bride’s best friend, Tom (Patrick Dempsey, aka “Grey’s Anatomy’s” McDreamy), a cad with whom she’d had a brief dalliance that ended when he wouldn’t concede to a relationship with her - and she broke his nose.

Melissa exacts revenge on Tom throughout the movie, regularly humiliating him and stinting his efforts to win over the bride (Michelle Monaghan).

“Melissa definitely has an evil, plotting side to her, which I think is really funny, but I feel it’s really just because she was hurt,” says Philipps. “It was really important to me that she have this sort of sad side to her, this underlying vulnerability where she really just feels kind of lost in the whole situation.

“I think all actors want to justify their characters’ bad behavior a little bit,” she adds, laughing. “That kind of stuff is always the most fun and interesting for me to play.”

Philipps, 28, born Elizabeth Jean Philipps, has only served as a maid of honor once - for a close friend from high school in Arizona, where she started acting in school plays and community theater.

She moved to Los Angeles to attend Loyola Marymount University and had nearly completed her second year when “Freaks and Geeks” was picked up by NBC. Soon after, the self-proclaimed “loud and energetic” actress was cast as Audrey, Joey Potter’s effervescent, trouble-making college roommate on “Dawson’s Creek.” More recently, she was quirky doc Hope Bobeck on “ER.”

“I tend to book more of the comedy roles,” says Philipps. “Even the role on ‘ER’ last year, which was so fantastic, I’m the comic relief. I really enjoy doing both. I think that what’s important about comedy is being able to find the dramatic elements to it, grounding it so that it’s a little bit more realistic.”

Acting briefly took a backseat a few years ago when Philipps was struck with an idea for a comedy about two dueling male figure skaters, and went to work on the script with an ex-boyfriend and his brother. That idea became last spring’s hit “Blades of Glory.”

“It was such a crazy whirlwind thing,” she says. “I sort of was aware of how good the idea was when it happened, and then the script sold. It was literally like, Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller - that was the idea. And Ben Stiller’s company bought it and Will Ferrell starred in it. It was crazy.”

In addition to working on another, more “personal” script, Philipps will act alongside Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Aniston in “He’s Just Not That Into You,” opening in October. She and husband Marc Silverstein, who co-wrote that screenplay, are expecting their first child in August.

Other than actress, writer, wife and mother-to-be, Philipps is close friends with her “Dawson’s Creek” co-star Michelle Williams and godmother to Williams’ daughter, Matilda, with the late actor Heath Ledger. Philipps declined to discuss the “personal” and “tough situation” for this story.

While Philipps admits that she can’t predict how impending motherhood will affect her, her goals change all the time.

“Some days I think all I want is to be on a series for the rest of my life, and some days I think that’s not what I want at all. I’d like to do a movie here and there, or have great bit parts or be a character actor. And then some days I want to be the leading lady.

“But I think at some point I would like to be back on a series,” she adds. “I’m a television watcher more than a movie watcher.”
