Fonda received the award at the 14th annual San Luis Obispo International Film Festival.

Past recipients of the award, named after the prolific director of “War and Peace,” include actor Morgan Freeman, director Norman Jewison and composer Elmer Bernstein.
The 68-year-old Fonda sported a black bootie from a recent ankle surgery. He suffered the injury more than 40 years ago in a tennis game, the actor told The Tribune in an interview earlier this month. On Saturday, he wore a black turtleneck, black sports coat, jeans and a brown cowboy boot.
